How to Minimise Hydrogen Evolution on Carbon Based Materials?

In many electrochemical systems, such as carbon dioxide reduction, batteries and supercapacitors, hydrogen evolution reaction is an undesired competing reaction. Herein, we investigate the factors controlling (HER) on seven different commercial materials commonly found in of these systems. The HER response was determined by rotating disk electrode potential hold measurements acidic media, correlated with physical characteristics nitrogen adsorption/desorption, well previous experiments same materials. An on-chip mass spectrometer used to probe gaseous products produced at situ, which allowed be distinguished from other onset established −0.38 V vs RHE. results indicate that carbons low amount metal impurities have lowest H 2 rates.
